Plano-based Web Site Hooks Up New Home Buyers in Trophy Club
By A. Lee Graham, Staff Writer
Soaring utility bills have residents seeking bargains, and a Plano-based
company offers a route to relief.
"You can log on to the Web site and comparison shop," said Veronica
Perez-Thomison, a spokeswoman for 2TurnItOn.com, offering one-stop-browsing for
homeowners seeking lower prices with minimal search time.
Trophy Club is among Northeast Tarrant municipalities offering the service,
discovering what many consider a convenience.
"It’s relatively new in the grand scheme of things," said Mike Pastor, with
Trophy Club’s information technology department.
Until recently, Trophy Club staff answered countless phone calls regarding
city-offered utility services.
These days, homeowners with computers can bypass calling multiple utility
companies and compare competitors through 2TurnItOn.com.
"If I moved from Irving to Trophy Club, I could set up phone, electricity,
water, etc. and put the ball in motion and have those vendors contacted via
2TurnItOn," said Pastor, whose colleagues then import that information into the
town’s system.
Grapevine, Colleyville and Flower Mound acquired the service in April 2005,
April 2006 and January 2005, respectively.
They are among several area communities offering residents that convenience.
"It enables city staff to process orders during non-peak, walk-in traffic
hours, so they can be more efficient," said Flower Mound Mayor Jody Smith in a
press release.
While city workers save time, what benefits can homeowners expect?
"They can look at cable providers and utility providers and see where they can
save money," said Perez-Thomison. "You just fill out one application and don’t
have to make any calls to the utility providers."
New homeowners know the drill.
Having unloaded moving vans, they face the dreaded task of acquiring utility
services after flipping through the phone book.
But technology has put the competition on a single Web page.
And it costs residents nothing. And in an era of rising gas prices, to say
nothing of air-conditioning bills, consumers pinch pennies wherever they can.
While the service offers convenience, it’s no panacea.
"You still have to show up for deposits and to go through whatever hoops there
are with each utility provider," said Pastor.
But Pastor believes that the ability to size up competing utilities on a single
Web page makes the process easier.
