DISCOUNT POWER
Complete Provider Analysis
While Discount Power delivers on its core promise of competitive pricing, customer feedback reveals areas needing attention. The billing clarity score of 24/100 and customer service score of 31/100 indicate some customers struggle with bill transparency and support interactions. However, the provider’s straightforward focus on affordability and backing by NRG Energy’s infrastructure may appeal to Texans prioritizing low rates over premium service features.

Positive Experiences
“Their service is good, the app helps you keep track of your account daily. When I renewed my contract, they gave me a Ring camera and a wireless, internet-controlled AC controller at no extra cost, which will help me keep energy consumption to a minimum with just one click from my phone.”
“Excellent prices and clearly stated ranges, best in the 1000-2000 kWh usage per month and contracts 1-2 years. Have had previous experience as well. No extras or surges – what’s quoted is what’s given.”
“Good rates all around Texas. Glad I have this company. Definitely I will renew my 36 month contract as it will expire soon!”
“I am pleased with the low rates I am paying from Discount Power and the low incidence of power outages. Our area has lots of trees but even with that the response has been good to get the power back on quickly.”
“If you have a problem, just call and speak to a representative. Explain your situation and they will take care of your problems. They are very knowledgeable about all of the causes and fixes which will guarantee you’ll have peace of mind choosing them.”
Critical Feedback
“Deceptive advertising, beware. Offered twice in an email ‘renew your service today and get a $50 bill credit.’ After signing up they didn’t honor the credit. Management said only 2 plans had the credit despite the email stating ‘You can choose from several plan options.’ Several and shorter terms does not match 2 long term plans of 60 months. Very misleading.”
“Worst power provider I’ve ever dealt with – misleading and deceptive pricing. They charge a $9.95 ‘usage charge’ if your consumption is below 1000 kWh, which makes no sense and is never clearly explained upfront. The price per kWh is actually HIGHER when you use less than 1000 kWh. You’re basically punished for conserving energy. None of this was clearly disclosed.”
“They were great for three years, but have gone downhill quickly. Customer service outsourced and barely trained. Do not trust a single word verbally – request everything in writing. The renewal rates for customers coming out of 36 month contracts are obscene – 3.2-5 cents per kWh greater than what other companies offer for the same contract length.”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
Discount Power: Use Caution
Budget rates come with service trade-offs
Discount Power earns a Use Caution recommendation despite its appeal to budget-conscious Texans. While the NRG-backed provider has operated since 2008 with a focus on competitive pricing, customer experience metrics raise concerns. The 3.6-star Google rating and negative NPS score of -3 suggest mixed satisfaction, while the customer service score of 31/100 and billing clarity score of 24/100 indicate significant friction points in day-to-day interactions. Separately, regulatory data shows 216 PUC complaints over the past 12 months—nearly double the industry average of 120—which signals systemic issues beyond typical customer frustrations. For customers who prioritize the absolute lowest rates and are comfortable navigating potential billing confusion or service challenges, Discount Power may still deliver value. However, those seeking a smoother customer experience should explore alternatives.

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
