Gexa Energy has been serving Texas electricity customers since 2002, making it one of the original retail electric providers when the state’s market first opened. Now owned by NextEra Energy, the world’s largest generator of renewable energy, Gexa has committed to 100% renewable energy across all residential plans since 2020. Customer sentiment is strong, with a 4.8-star rating and an impressive NPS of 78, indicating high satisfaction. Their PUC complaint volume of 108 over the past year falls below the industry average of 120. However, a billing clarity score of 48/100 suggests some customers find invoices difficult to interpret.

Positive Experiences
“I’ve used Gexa Energy for years now, and they’ve consistently been very reasonable in cost with a variety of plans to fit what works best for your property. I would recommend them to anyone. I’ve also had really great customer service experiences, and my last representative, Hosea C., was phenomenal and very helpful.”
“The entire process was simple, fast and so different from so many customer service experiences these days. Franco and Roberto were both so helpful. It was very easy to renew. Everyone was friendly and professional and they offered me a great 24 month plan that’s even more affordable than my last plan with them. Everything was thoroughly explained and they made sure I was comfortable with everything before we concluded.”
“Been with Gexa for more than a few years, but currently I was on a no contract account, which means a higher kW amount. Fortunately my rep listened to me and heard my concerns. He made an informative recommendation based on our usage and I was convinced.”
“Excellent customer service! Helped me understand my plan and all the additional fees. I felt very comfortable with the choice I had made. He answered all my questions in a concise way.”
“Very easy to work with. Set up was easy. Got a great rate. The team was courteous and answered all my questions. Just an overall good first impression of the Gexa Energy Team collectively.”
Critical Feedback
“Don’t use! They spelled my email wrong so I didn’t get a bill the first month of a 3 month contract, so they turned off the electricity and charged me a disconnection fee. I called and had it turned back on and the fee waived. Same thing happened the second and third month. I’m glad I’m through with them.”
“This is specifically about Gexa Energy’s Commercial accounts department. This is easily the most frustrating experience I have ever had with an electrical provider. Customer service is polite but never actually follows up on anything and will repeatedly read their script without seeming to know what they’re doing. I have been transferred through multiple people and departments, spending literal hours on the phone, trying to first set up an account and then trying to resolve billing inaccuracies.”
“David was polite but he incorrectly advised me about which plan was best for me. He wanted me to buy a flat rate plan but based on my usage another plan saves me a significant amount of money each month. Always remember that salesmen want what’s best for the company, not the customer.”

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
