Gexa Energy Review 2026
Gexa Energy has been serving Texas electricity customers since 2002, making it one of the original retail providers when the market deregulated. Now owned by NextEra Energy, the world’s largest renewable energy generator, Gexa transitioned to 100% renewable energy across all residential plans in 2020. Customer sentiment is strong, with a 4.8-star rating and an impressive NPS of 78. However, the company filed 134 PUC complaints over the past 12 months, slightly above the industry average of 120. Their billing clarity score of 48/100 suggests room for improvement in transparent communication.

Positive Experiences
“I called and spoke to Henry today to renew my contract for the next two years. He was very patient and answered all of my questions. He signed me up for the Gexa Guaranteed 24! I got a great rate and great customer service. Excellent customer experience and excellent rate!”
“I just renewed my Gexa Energy account. Brian, my representative, was far and above one of the best I have encountered in any customer service situation. He was patient, knowledgeable, friendly and effective in going through multiple options with me. He was willing to go back and review my past usage and cost vs several new plans… and I got a GREAT plan that I selected. Gexa is my choice due to price but most importantly customer service like that provided by Brian.”
“We have been with Gexa Energy for many years and have never experienced any issues with billings nor electricity outages aside from extreme weather-related problems which affected all energy companies. Definitely enjoy their customer portal where usage information is stored for several years. Additionally, there are great tips to follow for lowering electricity usage… all at the tips of your fingers!”
“The gentleman was very professional and helped me set up a landlord plan, which will enable me to cancel early when a new tenant moves in without any cancellation charges. Very helpful!”
“I called to renew my contract and it was super easy. I spoke to Eli and he walked me through everything. I was done in about 15 minutes. I’ve been with Gexa Energy for years and I don’t think I’ll ever leave them. They’re very professional, prices are good, and their operators are caring and share lots of information so we as customers can pick what’s best for us. That’s what I like.”
Critical Feedback
“Honestly the single most worst electric company I have ever dealt with. No grace period. No ACH payments. Card only. And sends disconnection notices less than 24 hours after being late on your bill. Do not recommend and I plan on switching the moment I can afford to.”
“Been a Gexa customer for years. They are always trying to get me out of my solar buyback program by reducing the overflow rate to 3 cents. Other than that it had been good. Recently I received a data sharing policy from Gexa and very soon thereafter I started getting tons of scam phone calls. Gexa, no one wants their data sold or given away. Make money some other way than compromising your customers’ private information!”
“Do not go through Gexa! They have no incentives and extremely high prices. They do not care about their customers, only their profit. I called customer service with no resolution. Gexa wanted to charge me 3x the amount I pay a month for budget billing. Make that make sense.”

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
