Green Mountain Review 2026
Green Mountain Energy has built its reputation as one of Texas’s longest-standing renewable energy providers, offering 100% clean electricity plans since 1997. Customer reviews reflect a 4.2-star rating with a Net Promoter Score of 33, indicating generally positive sentiment among subscribers. However, the company’s billing clarity score of 27/100 suggests some customers find their statements difficult to understand. On the regulatory side, Green Mountain received 132 PUC complaints over the past 12 months, slightly above the industry average of 120, indicating room for improvement in dispute resolution.

Complete Provider Analysis
Customer service experiences appear mixed, with a service score of 40/100 based on review sentiment. While Green Mountain’s environmental mission resonates with eco-conscious Texans, prospective customers should carefully review plan terms and billing structures before signing up. The combination of above-average complaint volume and lower billing clarity scores suggests paying close attention to contract details and monthly statements is advisable when considering this provider.

Positive Experiences
“My experience with this company has been great so far. Customer service was excellent yesterday – I had all my questions answered in a timely manner and the best part is I wasn’t transferred to different departments. I spoke with one person, resolved my issue, and I was done. Great job to the young man I spoke with to resolve my issue about my bill.”
“Green Mountain Energy is a trusted company that is very transparent and treats customers with honor and respect. The only company that offers month to month plans with no cancellation fee. I signed up at night online and had lights the next day. Highly recommend.”
“I was very close to moving my service to another company but Green Mountain’s customer service configured a deal I could not refuse. I strongly suggest calling customer service before signing with another provider.”
“I like their service because I can sign a contract for 3 years or more and the cost per kilowatt doesn’t change.”
“I’ve been using Green Mountain for years and they have ALWAYS been helpful, knowledgeable and ready to take care of whatever problem I’ve had. The Average Billing program is so helpful. I would recommend Green Mountain to anyone.”
Critical Feedback
“Have had this company for years up until now. Their rates used to be more reasonable but have recently skyrocketed. The kWh rate on my most recent bill was 19.2 cents, which is crazy. There are fixed rate plans from other companies around 12.5 cents. Charging over 50% more for power is unreasonable and they need to work on getting their rates more competitive.”
“Watch out for the bait and switch. They offered a 16.2 kW rate with free nights, then hit me with 0.22 kW and free nights, saying the average was 16.2. I’ve been with them a long time, but this is the second time they pulled something like this. Customer service just talks with no action. Lack of transparency and dishonesty is high here. They were great many years ago but no longer.”
“Poor communication! I chatted with an agent January 3rd to cancel my service since I was moving to an area where Green Mountain doesn’t operate. Only on January 13th did I find out my service was not canceled. I called and was told the chat agent didn’t receive all the information. No one communicated that they couldn’t complete the cancellation, and I was told there’s nothing they can do about it.”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
Green Mountain: Conditionally Recommended
Established green option with billing concerns
Green Mountain earns a conditional recommendation based on mixed performance across key metrics. The provider maintains a respectable 4.2-star Google rating and a positive NPS of 33, indicating that most customers are satisfied with their overall experience. However, significant concerns emerge in the details. The billing clarity score of just 27/100 suggests customers frequently encounter confusing charges or unexpected fees, while a customer service score of 40/100 points to inconsistent support experiences. On the regulatory front, Green Mountain logged 132 PUC complaints over the past year, exceeding the industry average of 120. While not dramatically higher, this warrants attention. For customers prioritizing renewable energy options who are comfortable monitoring their bills closely and addressing issues proactively, Green Mountain can work well. Those seeking hassle-free billing should explore alternatives.

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
