Green Mountain Review 2026
Green Mountain Energy has built its reputation as one of Texas’s first renewable energy retailers, offering 100% clean electricity plans since 1997. With a 4.1-star rating and a Net Promoter Score of 31, customer sentiment leans positive overall. The company’s PUC complaint volume of 112 over the past year falls slightly below the industry average of 120, suggesting a reasonable regulatory track record. However, a billing clarity score of 26/100 indicates that some customers find their bills difficult to understand, which prospective customers should consider.

Customer service experiences appear mixed, reflected in a service score of 39/100 based on review sentiment. While many customers appreciate Green Mountain’s environmental mission and straightforward renewable options, others report frustrations with billing transparency and support responsiveness. Positive Experiences
“They are always very knowledgeable. And the bill is understandable, clear. No hidden fees. My bill has been $190 to $238. I was with TXU since 1969, they just continued to increase their bill – last one from TXU was $350. So I changed to Green Mountain, I am very happy with the company.”
“My experience with this company has been great so far. Customer service was excellent yesterday – I had all my questions answered in a timely manner and the best part is I wasn’t transferred to different departments. I spoke with one person, resolved my issue, and I was done. Great job to the young man I spoke with to resolve my issue about my bill!”
“I switched because with Green Mountain I never have had any issues – excellent customer service. I signed up with a rep outside in front of HEB. I’m so proud I changed. I’ve had Reliant, Direct Energy. Green Mountain had a cheaper offer. They always call me for updates or if I need anything. They follow up every year. I’m impressed.”
“Green Mountain Energy is a trusted company that is very transparent and treats customers with honor and respect. The only company that offers month to month plans with No Cancellation Fee. I signed up at night online and had lights the next day. Highly recommend.”
“I’ve used Green Mountain Energy for several years and they have ALWAYS been helpful, knowledgeable and ready to take care of whatever problem I’ve had. The Average Billing program is so helpful. I would recommend Green Mountain to anyone.”
Critical Feedback
“Worst experience. I called three times before my move-out and clearly informed them that I would not be continuing the service. However, a week after moving out, I received an email showing my weekly usage and realized I had been enrolled in a month-to-month plan without my knowledge. I contacted customer service and asked them to check the call records, as I had already spoken to an agent and confirmed the cancellation. I was never informed that I would be automatically enrolled in a monthly plan.”
“Have had this company for years up until now. Their rates used to be more reasonable but have recently skyrocketed. The kWh rate on my most recent bill was 19.2 cents, which is crazy. There’s fixed rate plans from other companies that are around 12.5 cents. Charging over 50% more for power is unreasonable and they need to work on getting their rates more competitive.”
“We paid our monthly bill on time like always, today we get notification a balance is still due for the same amount. After speaking with a rep, they admit it was an error on their end, but threatened to shut us off if we didn’t immediately process payment. Customer for 12 years running, but this billing error handling was extremely disappointing.”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
Green Mountain: Conditionally Recommended
Eco-friendly option with billing transparency concerns
Green Mountain earns a conditional recommendation based on mixed performance across key metrics. The provider maintains a solid 4.1-star Google rating and a positive NPS of 31, indicating that most customers would recommend the service. Their regulatory record is encouraging, with 112 PUC complaints over the past year falling below the industry average of 120. However, significant concerns emerge in the details: a billing clarity score of just 26/100 suggests customers frequently struggle to understand their charges, while the customer service score of 39/100 indicates room for improvement when issues arise. These pain points warrant attention, particularly for customers who value straightforward billing. Green Mountain may work well for environmentally-conscious consumers willing to navigate occasional billing complexity in exchange for renewable energy options.

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
