Just Energy is a multinational energy retailer founded in 1997 that serves over 4.5 million customers across North America, including Texas customers through its family of brands. The company emerged from 2021 bankruptcy restructuring following Winter Storm Uri and is currently being acquired by IGS Energy. Customer reviews reflect a 4.4-star rating with a True NPS of 53, indicating generally positive sentiment. However, the company’s 254 PUC complaints over the past 12 months exceeds the industry average of 120, and its Billing Clarity Score of 16/100 suggests room for improvement in billing transparency.

While the company’s customer service score of 46/100 indicates mixed experiences with support interactions, its above-average NPS suggests many customers remain satisfied overall. Texas shoppers should carefully review plan terms and billing structures, particularly given the lower billing clarity scores reflected in customer feedback.

Positive Experiences
“I had a fantastic experience with Tristan and Brandon! They were incredibly knowledgeable and took the time to thoroughly explain my current energy plan and exactly how I could save money by switching to Just Energy. Their patience and clear communication made the whole process easy to understand. I truly appreciate their dedication to helping customers.”
“I’ve been with Just Energy for 15+ years and honestly have nothing bad to say about this company. They’re very understanding and work their best with you to give you the best prices!! 10/10!!”
“Just Energy was god sent. They were so professional and patient with me. I suffer from hearing loss and they took their time with me.”
“Joanne P was a great help, 10/10! I like how they have different plans to fit your choice and lifestyle to better help you save and keep great energy in your household. Ask for Joanne if you ever need service – she was great, it was like talking to someone I already knew. Great job!”
“Richard was very professional. He explained my bill and was upfront about charges I will be getting.”
Critical Feedback
“Service has been good. My dislike is with their billing. Most companies at least have a grace period of a few days. They add almost $30 from a DNP notice to your bill THE NEXT DAY after your due date. The notifications still reflect the original amount due. Very frustrated about having almost another $30 added and will be considering moving on to a different company.”
“This company is horrible. One day after your bill is due they will charge you a late fee. I had to wait until payday and was late paying and they disconnected my electric. Don’t waste your time with their ‘low’ kWh. They get you with their other fees. After only 3 months I’m switching companies.”
“I would not recommend Just Energy to anyone. This is by far the worst electric company I have ever dealt with. From day one, I’ve had constant issues. Their customer service is extremely difficult to reach, and when you finally do get someone, the problems are rarely resolved properly. The communication is poor, the wait times are ridiculous, and the overall experience has been frustrating and stressful.”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
Just Energy: Conditionally Recommended
Established provider with mixed service track record
Just Energy brings significant experience as a multinational energy marketer founded in 1997, offering fixed-rate plans with renewable energy options across multiple Texas brands. Customer sentiment shows promise with a solid 4.4-star rating and a True NPS of 53, indicating generally satisfied customers who would recommend the service. However, the data reveals notable concerns. The Billing Clarity Score of just 16/100 suggests customers frequently encounter confusion with their bills, and 254 PUC complaints over 12 months—more than double the industry average of 120—signals recurring service issues that warrant attention. The Customer Service Score of 46/100 indicates room for improvement in support interactions. With the pending acquisition by IGS Energy, service dynamics may shift. Just Energy can work well for customers who prioritize fixed-rate stability and green energy options, but those sensitive to billing transparency should proceed carefully.

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
