Customer sentiment appears strong, with a 4.7-star rating and an NPS of 70, suggesting high satisfaction among reviewers. Positive Experiences
“My care team associate was awesome today. She was incredibly patient and took time to listen to my needs. She used her extensive knowledge to help me so that I didn’t have to keep repeating myself over and over. She was pleasant and courteous throughout our entire chat session. And she made sure that all of my needs were handled in just 1 chat. That was the cherry on top.”
“Quick electric connection with solar panels buyback plan. All done through chat online. Definitely recommend!”
“I wanted a better all-in rate for my service. I used the online Live Chat, Martha helped me find the best plan, and I was very satisfied with the results!”
“TXU customer service is why I have been with them since 2009 and won’t go anywhere else. They are awesome.”
“Oscar Alejandro walked me through the process and explained plans. He was patient, professional, and knowledgeable.”
Critical Feedback
“Unfortunately 1 star is the least I could rate. They don’t specify on the bill about disconnection notice and when we pay to get the power back on, they give a time frame of 2-48 hours for it to come back. Absolutely ridiculous! They’re so quick to take your money but slow to turn the power back on. I’m 7 months pregnant, have a 2yr old toddler, and food going bad in the fridge/freezer. We’ve been without power for over 24hrs already in this Texas heat!”
“The old saying is ‘Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.’ We signed up with TXU in Houston with a promise of a $200 Visa which we never received. When we inquired, TXU played totally ignorant of the promise. Unfortunately, our residence in Laguna Vista was already with TXU when we moved in so we continued with their service. Upon switching from the original owner they again promised a $220 Visa. Guess what? It never came.”
“TXU sent my bill to collections named Global Solution. I paid off my small debt and have not received a payment receipt for them to confirm it. When I talk to TXU they refer me back to the collection agency, and when I talk to the collection agency they refer me back to TXU saying they have nothing else to do with it. Who does business with someone who can’t offer you a receipt after payment?”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
TXU Energy: Conditionally Recommended
Texas legacy provider with mixed regulatory standing
TXU Energy earns a conditional recommendation based on a complex performance picture. As Texas’s oldest electricity provider with over 140 years of history, the company delivers strong customer satisfaction metrics—a 4.7-star rating, impressive NPS of 70, and solid customer service score of 78/100 demonstrate that most customers have positive experiences. However, two significant concerns warrant attention: their billing clarity score sits at just 30/100, and their 413 PUC complaints over the past 12 months is more than triple the industry average of 120. This regulatory record suggests systemic issues that contrast with their otherwise favorable reviews. TXU Energy suits customers who prioritize working with an established provider and value plan variety, but those sensitive to billing transparency or wary of complaint trends should proceed with careful plan review.

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
